Friday 5th March 2010 The Expert Patient Programme: Looking after Me! Looking after Me is a free self-management course for carers. Do you look after someone? Is your health affected? Would you like to feel more in control? Then Looking after Me is for you! As its name implies, the course is about you making time to look after your own health needs. It aims to help you take more control of your situation and make a difference to your life. The course looks at: relaxation techniques dealing with tiredness exercise healthy eating coping with depression communicating with family, friends and professionals planning for the future Click here to download a flyer about this course and others. Tuesday 23rd February 2010 If you have a disability and you would be interested in 12 months paid work experience, Walsall Council's Recruit-Ability programme could be for you.  Click here to see a list of the placements available. There may be some more placements available, we will share these with you as and when we receive details. We have also made an easy read guide to looking for work and applying for jobs. Thursday 11th February 2010 The Strategic Health Authority are asking all Learning Disability Partnership Boards to do a “Health Check” of their services. This is to make sure that we are doing what we should be doing for the health needs of people who have learning disabilities. As well as telling them what we think, it is important that we include what people with learning disabilities and their carers think. On the 30th March we are holding a special ‘Healthy Lives’ meeting. The Healthy Lives group is an advisory group to the Partnership Board. It is a well attended and very productive group. We would like to invite around six carers who have experience of learning disability health services in Walsall to attend the meeting and help us complete the assessment. The meeting will be on from 10.30am until 12.30pm, with lunch afterwards. Anyone who is interested in helping us can call Sam Davies on 01922 650367 for more details. Wednesday 3rd February 2010 Keyring are looking for volunteers in the Bloxwich, Pelsall and Rushall areas. If you think you could spare 12 hours a week to help people with learning disabilities  live in supported accomodation, please get in touch. The theme is 'Getting It Right', looking at people's experiences of the National Health Services. Mencap would like to hear from people with a learning disability and their carers about their experiences. Maybe you had a very good experience and recieved the right service for you. Or perhaps you had a bad experience and your health got worse. We want to know what carers' health issues we should be looking at too. if you have any ideas, please use the contact us page to let us know. We will also be building a page which introduces you to the different services available in Walsall. If you have details of a service that you would like to include, please forward them to daviessam@walsall.gov.uk Monday 18th January 2010 We have had over 1,000 visits in the two weeks since the re-launch of the website. We have also had LOTS of feedback from people with a learning disability, carers and other professionals. It has been mostly very good, but some people have suggested how we could make the site better. We will be speaking to these people and we will try to include as many of your ideas as possible. Friday 8th January 2010 There is now a section of the website for GPs about Directly Enhanced Services (DES). The DES is designed to encourage practices to identify those patients with moderate to severe LD as defined by the same criteria used by the local authority Practices will be expected to provide an annual health check to patients on the local authority LD register.
